CONFLICTS

Congo

Conflicts > Sub-Saharan Africa > Democratic Republic of the Congo

CONTEXT

The eastern part of the country (North Kivu, South Kivu, Ituri) has been affected for decades by local and regional armed groups, disputes over natural resources, and ethnic tensions.

Evolution

  • Groups such as the FDLR (Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda) and the M23 remain active, causing mass displacement and violence against civilians.
  • In 2023, a new genocide broke out in Sudan with the internal conflict between the army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Khartoum, triggering a humanitarian crisis and mass displacement both within the country and to neighboring countries.
