Thousands of people die every year in the Mediterranean searching for a future for themselves and their families.

In 2011, the wave of protests known as the “Arab Spring” reached Syria and escalated into an open civil war. Jihadist groups and foreign powers soon became involved.

The conflict triggered one of the largest refugee crises in history, with hundreds of thousands attempting to cross by sea from Turkey to Greece in search of safety.

In September 2015, the photo of little Alan Kurdi drowned on a beach awakened the global community. As rescuers, we knew we had to be there. We rushed to Lesbos to assist the hundreds of Syrian refugees fleeing war. That became, unknowingly, the first mission of Open Arms.

A decade later, people are still dying in the Mediterranean. That’s why we’re still here. We’ve saved the lives of more than 70,000 people fleeing war, natural disasters, persecution, or poverty. And with your help, we’ll save many more.

Almost 31,000 people have lost their lives in the Central Mediterranean since 2014. Human beings simply looking for a future. Our mission is to be there to help them.

We created a sustained humanitarian corridor to the Gaza Strip with tons of food in collaboration with World Central Kitchen.

What compels us to act

At Open Arms, we work to protect lives forced to flee. Every rescue tells a story marked by armed conflicts, violence, extreme poverty, or persecution. When safe migration routes do not exist, people seek others that are more dangerous. That is where our work becomes urgent and necessary.

Conflicts Open Arms

There are more conflicts in the world than you might think. Learn about them and understand why we are necessary.

Without safe and regular migration routes, more dangerous ones emerge. Understand why we operate where we do.
