CONTEXT
The Middle East is home to two major conflicts: on one hand, the civil war in Syria, and on the other, the war in Yemen. Both conflicts involve other countries and global powers, in addition to those directly affected.
SYRIA
The Syrian civil war began in 2011 with protests against the regime of Bashar al-Assad.
Yemen
In 2014, internationally recognized President Al-Hadi was overthrown in a coup by the Houthis, a Shia group allegedly backed by Iran.
Israel – Iran
For decades, Iran has been a key player in the balance of power in the Middle East.
