CONFLICTS

YEMEN

CONTEXT

In 2014, internationally recognized President Al-Hadi was overthrown in a coup by the Houthis, a Shia group allegedly backed by Iran. Government loyalist forces clashed with the coup leaders, triggering the war. In this context, a coalition of Arab states led by Saudi Arabia launched a military intervention by air and land in an attempt to repel the Houthis, resulting in even more civilian casualties.

EVOLUTION

  • Fighting and tensions persist, especially in strategic areas such as the Marib region and the Red Sea coast.
  • It is considered by the UN as one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world, with famine and a collapse of basic services.
  • Despite negotiations and a fragile ceasefire in 2022–2023, no definitive political solution has been reached.
  • Arms-exporting countries profit from this war, as they do from many others. In this case, Spain exported weapons to the Saudi-led coalition, as reported by the Delàs Centre for Peace Studies.
