CONFLICTS
UKRAINE
If you believe that in the face of war, the lives of the most vulnerable must be protected, you are one of us.
CONTEXT
In 2014, Russia annexed the Crimean Peninsula after holding a referendum that was not recognized by most countries around the world. In the following years, the fighting continued in the Donbas, the eastern part of Ukraine bordering Russia, between pro-Russian separatist groups and the pro-European Ukrainian government forces.
In February 2022, the war escalated and spread across the entire country with the full-scale military invasion launched by Vladimir Putin.

Evolution
- The regions of Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson, in the south and east of Ukraine, remain occupied by Russia and are the scene of intense fighting.
- Millions of people have been affected by the conflict, including internally displaced persons and refugees, the latter mainly in neighboring European countries.
- The international community has imposed sanctions on Russia, and NATO, the EU, and other actors support Ukraine with military, humanitarian, and financial assistance.
- The conflict has led to a global energy and food crisis (especially due to grain exports from Ukraine).
